The 2011 Lascelles awards, offering grants to young wakeboarders amongst other disciplines of British Water Ski and Wakeboard have been announced at their AGM. The awards are open to youngsters between the ages of 12 and 18 years of age and came about when Former President of British Water Ski, Major General Anthony Lascelles, left a trust fund. Grants were then established ‘to assist highly promising young athletes from any recognised sporting division of BWSW to win medals at European and World Championships.’
If last year’s awards are anything to go by, they certainly seem to be accurately recognising young talent. Chloe Goudie, who was also awarded a grant last year, reached dizzy heights becoming World Cable Champion in the Girls division of the IWWF competition in Germany! All the girls awarded this year will have been noticed from the reputations they’ve built from the competition circuit and as individuals over the course of the 2010 season.

Amongst the many competitions that all the girls entered in 2010, Laura Christian came 4th at the Cable Worlds and scooped silver at the Europeans. Katie Batchelor also had a great year winning amongst her many podium places, the Junior Boat Nationals and a bronze in the European Wakeboard Boat championships in Sweden, and Charlotte Millward placed second, behind Katie at the Youth Boat Nationals and the Ryan and Tony Birch Memorial Boat contest.
With Lascelles funding to help them in 2011, we hope these young ladies will go from strength to strength and inspire you too, to get out on the water and push for your dreams. The Lascelles awards are increasingly recognising the female wakeboarding talent in the UK and with more girls competing and driving up the standards of riding, we hope this current crop of grants is a taste of things to come.
Keep an eye on these names in 2011, we think you’ll be hearing a lot more about them and look out for our features on both Katie and Laura coming soon on WAW with exciting news of their 2011 sponsorship!

“In 2011 I plan to enter more competitions and to travel a lot more to get to them, which is where the money comes in helpful to give me more training and coaching time on the water”

“I am really stoked and grateful to receive a Lascelles grant this year as it will really help fund my wakeboarding for 2011. It means I can get some more coaching and also travel to different cables and competitions throughout the season which is great for experience. A huge thank you to all the Lacelles Patrons!” 4h>
