2011 Teva UK Cable wakeboard and Wakeskate Nationals

It only seems like yesterday that we were all in awe of the incredible standards set by last year’s Cable Nationals, when in the blink of an eye, we’re doing it all over again! The UK cable riding community gathered in Cirencester at WMSki over the weekend to show case their hard work over the past 12 months. The pinnacle of the country’s passion for the sport at all ages and levels, the 2011 Teva UK Cable Wakeboard and Wakeskate Nationals was fantastic testament to the incredible talent we have here in the UK. With a record 85 entrants, the event was spread over two days, compressing all the finals into a seriously exciting sunny Saturday!

The course was made up of an inside rail, choice of left or right kicker before first corner of the course, then after second corner, outside A frame rail, then inside transfer box, followed by outside flat bar to finish the course. Each rider given two passes, highest score counts, then placing determined order for the final. Again two runs, best determining final score.
The courageous mini girls in their first competition started the proceedings (age 11 and under) and set a pretty high benchmark. Local rider Evie Philips was crowned champion after demonstrating great confidence on all the obstacles and blowing a few cheeky kisses to the judges!

3. Kytana stronach
4. Beth Christian
Jump forward a few years to the Girls Ladies division and you’ll be treated to a variety of air tricks, impressive rail skills, and courage… in bucket loads! Only last year, Katie Batchelor landed her first raley in competition, Laura Christian had just got them consistent, then fast forward 12 months and you can add back rolls, krypts and monsterous gapped transfer rails to the mix as well as another air borne rider to the fold, welcome Lottie Harbottle. These girls are adding air tricks before the first corner, and Laura managed both backroll and raley between the towers! This is most definitely a division to keep a close eye on.

One noticeable aspect of the overall competition, was the return to fitness of many riders struck down through injury last year. Sophie Cordery is possibly the greatest example of ‘coming back stronger’. This was her third consecutive victory this year after knee surgery a year ago and she looks like going from strength to strength! Both she and current World Champion Chloe Goudie laid down intimidating runs, Chloe reaching stratospheric heights on her kicker and air tricks. Special mention has to go to Lara Mackay, attempting her fisrt raley and nearly landing it in qualifiers. Well done girl.

Never before has the Open Women division had so many entries. With prize money up for grabs, the battle was on! Tor, again back from knee surgery, pulled out the big guns. She’s been keeping a fairly low profile so far this season, so there was huge anticipation to see what she was going to produce, and she didn’t disappoint! Vulcan, switch roll to revert, raley, roll to blind amongst her tricks, boom! But it was Steph Caller’s home advantage that saw her clear runs including Blind Judge, roll to blind, massive gap on the fun box and steezy nose press 360 on the flat bar take the top spot. Special mention goes to Jo Andrews, in her first ever comp, landing a raley, krypt and giving us all a lesson in steezy rail riding!!

Whilst we’re waiting on the official pictures from the event, here’s a video from Tim Royle at WhiteNoSugar productions to give you a flavour of what went down at the 2011 Teva UK Cable wakeboard and wakeskate Nationals. Well done to all concerned for putting on a great event and to all riders stepping up for one of the greatest Nationals yet.
